Compadre’s Healing Hooves

Compadre, our elderly donkey, arrived with chronic foot issues that we’ve been managing with regular podiatry visits. For over a year, Dr. Metcalf has been working tirelessly to improve his hoof health and overall comfort.

Surprise Hoof Growth

During Compadre’s latest checkup, we noticed he had been lying down more than usual—something that raised a red flag. Before taking X-rays, Dr. Metcalf spotted a surprise: Compadre’s hooves had grown significantly in just six weeks. While springtime can accelerate hoof growth, this sudden spurt was still unexpected.

A Tough Diagnosis

The X-rays revealed some tough news—Compadre is suffering from pressure necrosis in his bones. Years of hoof issues have led to bone demineralization, making his condition more complex and his recovery more delicate.

To help relieve pressure and stabilize his gait, Dr. Metcalf used a special glue to build up Compadre’s hooves and added a cast for balance and support. These modifications are designed to help distribute weight more evenly and improve his comfort as he moves around the pasture.

What’s Next for Compadre?

We’ll reassess his progress in six weeks. If his condition hasn’t improved—or shows signs of decline—we’ll conduct another round of X-rays to determine the best next steps in his care plan.

Note: Compadre is always sedated during his treatments to keep both him and our team safe and stress-free!

We’re incredibly grateful for Dr. Metcalf’s continued compassion and care as we work to keep this sweet guy as happy and mobile as possible. Stay tuned for updates on Compadre’s journey.
