Today was vaccination day for our sheep and goats—24 in total! (Buckeye got a head start last month with Dr. Avery.)

What Is the CDT Vaccine?

Each spring, our herd receives the CDT vaccine to protect against Clostridium perfringens types C & D (aka “overeating disease”) and Clostridium tetani (tetanus). It’s a simple step that helps keep everyone safe, healthy, and thriving year-round.

We also use this time for a deeper wellness check with FAMACHA scoring—a quick method to assess anemia levels by comparing the color of the inner eyelid to a chart.

Almost everyone handled vaccines like champs… almost.

Honeydew had other plans and pulled off a surprise barrel roll (right over Christa, one of our farm hands) knocking her to the ground. Safe to say, things got a little lively!

The good news? All FAMACHA scores looked great. Dr. Avery also checks these during regular herd visits.

Shearing Season Ahead

With spring check-ups complete, it’s time to prepare for warmer days. Next on the list: shearing the sheep to keep them cool and comfortable through the Texas heat.

From vaccines to a little unexpected rodeo action, it was a full day at the Sanctuary—and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
