Meet Mundi, the 41-Year-Old Elephant Rescued from Isolation

Rescued by: Elephant Aid International in Attapulgus, GA

On May 12, 2023, Mundi landed in pachyderm paradise and became Elephant Refuge North America's third elephant and first African. Now, Mundi gets to embrace her new life at ERNA, living freely in nature, forming deep friendships, and enjoying a world of love and care. Funds are being used on constructing a huge pond and mud wallow, installing a solar-powered well, expanding the security and EleCam system for behavior observation and the public’s nonintrusive 24-hour viewing pleasure, reinforcing fencing, and stocking up on hay, grain, and nutritional supplements.

When the rescue request for Mundi came from the now defunct Mayagüez Zoo in Puerto Rico, Elephant Aid International  knew immediate action was needed. The zoo's deteriorating conditions led to its closure, and the intervention of the US Department of Justice paved the way for Mundi's rescue, marking the beginning of her journey to Georgia, to Elephant Refuge North America (ERNA), where she can finally experience true autonomy and the joy of building a family! The refuge spans 850 acres of lush pastures and forests in Attapulgus, Georgia. ERNA provides a safe haven for three elephants, promoting natural elephant behavior and fostering loving bonds with caregivers.

Mundi was flown on a dedicated 747 flight and arrived at the Refuge in the first week of May.
